Freelance Writing Qualifications

OK, all of you who think they have freelance writing qualifications — Raise Your Hand!

Yeah, that’s everybody. The truth is EVERYBODY AND ANYBODY CAN WRITE. There’s really no academic qualifications needed when you enter the writing profession. All you need is a passion.

Nobody who writes online for a living has some kind of Masters in Language or Fine Writing. Anyone who has a flair for words, who can creatively tell stories and convey messages that are understandable and interesting can write. Even from the youngest child in the first grade to the most elderly grandmothers, people are writing online nowadays and loving it.

That’s right. You don’t need to be academically gifted to write online but a sense of adventure and daring can always help make things more interesting.

Another great thing about writing online is that YOU DON’T NEED TO BE AN EXPERT IN THE TOPIC YOU’RE WRITING ABOUT. Yes, read it again if you want. The Internet is already a veritable trove of all the information you’ll ever need.

Ever heard of the word RESEARCH? That’s part of your job. It is actually a simple, simple thing to search for what you need online and as a writer, you just have to make that information as interesting and appealing as possible to your readers. Practically a no-brainer right?

However, you do need to be as accurate as possible with your research. Misinformation or wrong information is not good for you nor will it go over well with your readers. There are some writers who spend more time researching online and even off by referring to books, magazines and newspapers — because you also need to be unique and original.

That’s what writers should be — unique and original perfectionists. If you really want to drill into freelance writing requirements, then I would say this may be the only thing.

You also need to have a grounded perspective on everything you see online. For example, if you are looking at say, a new product but you don’t like how the copy was written and you think there’s a way the product could’ve been sold better, that is an indication right there that you can write.

If you are able to write from your own perspective or idea that’s good because people always enjoy reading about what other people think. It makes the product or service sound more real.

As long as you can express yourself coherently, you can write. Leave the technicalities to research.
