For people who are serious about dumping their books…

Think of a book. Any book.

You can be at the airport or in the middle of a summer vacation sunbathing on a beach. Whatever. It doesn’t matter where you are. Just think of a book you wished you’d brought it with you.

Done that?

Ok.

And now it’s in your hands in less than a minute.

Is it magic?

No.

It’s the Amazon Kindle.

I used to carry three or four books, a few magazines, and my laptop in my carry-on bag, at the minimum. Now I carry a 10-ounce Amazon Kindle and a four-pound laptop.

The Kindle is an electronic reading device that’s about the size of a paperback book. Specifically, it measures 7.5″ x 5.3″ x 0.7″ and weighs 10.3 ounces. It features black and white 6″ screen with 600×800 resolution and can hold hundreds of books, magazines, and newspapers.

In short, it’s an electronic book reader.

Wireless Reading Device

It’s the new wireless reading device from Amazon. Well…not exactly new. But it’s the 2nd-generation portable reader Kindle. The first version was launched in November 2007 and sold out pretty quickly.

Best of all, you can download books wirelessly, anytime, anywhere from Amazon. If you can think of a book while standing in line at the airport, it’s in your hands in less than a minute (as long as you have a mobile phone signal).

Before I got a Kindle, I used to buy books in airport bookstores. I generally overpaid and didn’t get a book I wanted.

Worse. I had to find space in my luggage to carry them. That meant constantly having to sacrifice getting souvenirs to bring home.

Now, I just download any of these electronic books into my wireless reader and they cost less too.

For example, I bought Jim Rogers’ new book on China in an airport bookstore for $27. Then I dragged it and three other books all over my trip with me. When I got home, I bought a Kindle. The same Jim Rogers book is $9.99 on Kindle. Most books are $9.99. Currently, the Kindle store offer more than 230,000 titles.

Also, I get the Wall Street Journal delivered to my hotel bed, courtesy of the Amazon Kindle. I don’t have to go and find one. And I can hop in a taxi and know I have it in my hands.

Portable Reading Device

The Amazon Kindle is a portable ebook reader, a hand-held device for reading electronic books (e-books).

It uses an electronic paper display and downloads content over the free wireless network Whispernet which uses Sprint’s high speed data network, EVDO.

Why is it FREE you ask?

Because Amazon foots the monthly bill for wireless delivery of content purchased at the Kindle Store.

More Than A Wireless Ebook Reader

The Amazon Kindle can do other things, too… besides being a digital book reader. You can check your Gmail account on it, download audiobooks and ebooks, listen to music, and such.

But the only thing it does really well is beam you books. All the wireless books you need, and it’s just 10 ounces.

Great!

The Amazon Kindle is entirely a new age device with unbound possibilities to avail. A convenient, portable reading gadget with the ability to wirelessly download books, blogs, magazines, newspapers, you name it.

It’s a must-have in my books (pun intended)!

Click here to get a feel of its actual size and a quick tour of the amazing Kindle.

Gothic romances flourished in the late 18th and 19th century in England, often involving stories that centered on the supernatural tinged with horror and were often set against a backdrop of haunted medieval castles and dark backgrounds.

It usually centered on spirited young women who were either governesses or new brides to tall, dark and handsome men with mysterious pasts, who move into large, gloomy mansions with peculiar servants and precocious children.

The forerunner of this darkly popular genre is The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole published in 1764.

The secret to a successful novel about gothic romance writing is to put in lots of horror and mysterious elements which is what the avid readers of this genre have come to love. While there should also be an element of romance thrown in, it needs to be complemented with a dash of the supernatural and a pinch of evil.

Nothing should ever be really obvious and should be shrouded in mystery till the end. Everything must be coated in a patina of decay and collapse.

The main characters of gothic romance novels on the other hand need to go through a lot of emotional ups and downs, need to be dealing with forces seemingly beyond their human capabilities but eventually come out triumphant in the end.

Their existence that is already filled with torment must be further compounded by dark backgrounds and settings like haunted mansions and castles whose bleak atmosphere adds to the hopelessness of their situation.

This is the type of plot that make the gothic romance genre so popular with readers — the appeal of the unknown and forbidden, the air of mystery that seems to be a preclude to a thrilling climax where everything comes into place for the novel’s characters despite the odds they faced.

Understanding the nature of this genre is important if you want to be able to write a gothic romance novel. Read as many novels as you can and take notes on the writing style, the fluidity of the characters’ dialogues, the themes and the settings.

Note how the elements of horror, intrigue, mystery and evil are all interwoven together to form a suspenseful plot. See how the characters can be endearingly morbid and tragic but loved by the readers.

And more importantly, don’t scrimp on the drama.

One of the hottest rising genres in literature today is the Christian romance novels. In many ways it is similar to your typical romance novel with slight differences in characterization and plot.

A Christian romance novel revolves around Christian themes and takes on a Christian point of view, emphasizing Christian values and putting them in a positive light in its plot, characters or both.

Christian romance writing centers around characters who have the proper understanding of God and whatever conflicts are portrayed are usually resolved by praying for guidance, turning to a pastor for advice or seeking comfort in Bible scriptures.

Romance novels on the other hand, focus more on the romantic love between two people and must have an emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending. Conflicts center around the core theme of romantic love and how these two people build a relationship despite these conflicts.

While the plots of both romance and Christian romance novels also revolve around issues of faith, dating and marriage, Christian romance novels don’t expound on the subjects of sex, cheating and adultery as romance novels do.

While romance novels tend to be very graphic about sex, Christian romance novels mostly just imply rather than directly acknowledge its existence and leave the details up to the readers’ imagination.

It is actually something that most readers enjoy since they sometimes find the graphical descriptions a bit embarassing and just letting them use their imagination makes the characters and plot more real and relatable.

Also, more and more people find that this non-graphical approach is a refreshing change from the mainstream novels which can be very descriptive to a fault. It doesn’t mean however that the characters in romance novels and Christian romance novels don’t experience the same problems. They do but they just resolve it in different ways that are genre-appropriate.

Despite the fact that writing a Christian romance novel can be harder because it requires a skillful and very creative way with words especially when describing certain situations, the Christian romance market is enjoying a surge of popularity right now due to its more ethical and moralistic plots that send out very positive messages.

So if you’re thinking about penetrating the Christian romance market, you need to think carefully on how your characters will deal with the situations you will be writing for them. Remember that it must not in any way compromise the theme and must appear socially appropriate.

Those who are new to the business of writing romance novels must first and foremost know that a plot is an object and not a process. A plot is a concept that saturates every page of your novel and makes it come alive for your readers. A plot brings everything about your story come together to make a successful romance novel.

A plot strings your events together like links in a chain. A story is not a story without a plot. A plot is not something you use to fill your pages but rather something that will make your readers turn the pages. If you cannot give the plot within 12 sentences then you don’t have an idea of what the plot of your story is.

Writing a romance novel can be based only on so many basic plots but it is the writer’s style and the way the plot is presented that will make it original. Some examples of basic points to consider for a plot is as follows:

The love relationship of your two main characters must be frought with obstacles they must overcome to be together

They want to fall in love but can’t because in some ways they are not suited for each other

They fail to overcome the first obstacle they are presented with and must prove their love is true

Through all this, your characters must show that they have deep feelings for each other so that readers will be able to root for them and want them to get together in the end.

There are basic romance writing plots that you can use to give life to your story while at the same time making sure the romance factor is high. An example of a basic romance plot would be pursuit. You need to make sure that there is real danger in getting caught, and that your two main characters may even get caught or almost get caught.

You also need to establish the rules of the chase, the stakes and start the ball rolling with a motivating incident. Another basic plot you can try building on is rescue which involves your two main characters and their antagonist going on a journey of pursuit, separation and confrontation before finally reuniting.

Or if you’re after fast-paced action, you can always go for the adventure plot wherein your male or female lead starts out on their own in search of fortune, motivated by something or someone and then needing each other to finish the task…and eventually getting together of course.

Don’t let the fact that every type of plot has already been used in the past hinder you from giving it an original spin and making it interesting for your readers, regardless of whether they’ve read it before.

It is really up to the writer, just as it is up to a good seamstress to make over an old dress and update it to a more contemporary and modern style. To make it more real to your readers, you need to adapt your plot to the current time and setting of today’s world to give it a new twist while at the same time retaining some of the old-fashioned appeal that will draw your readers in.

Once you learn the secret to great plotting, you will be able to come out with your own romance best seller.

If you’re still deciding what the best romance novel writing style is, go with drama. you won’t go wrong with it.

Drama is when a person does an amazing thing with equally amazing results. Drama is what makes a story fun and interesting and without it, your story is like a car that ran out of fuel…it just can’t go on.

Drama is a necessary part of every story. A little conflict always livens up the plot and creates just the right amount of conflict will ensure that your readers keep reading. In romance novels, drama is a very essential element and it is precisely what makes every romance novel different from the other.

You start by establishing your characters, the setting and the conflict or drama. This is where you start to set the stage or the ambience against which your plot is set. Next comes the rising or succeeding action where your drama should start to unfold.

This is the part where the characters must start to get interesting, the part where the readers must get caught up in as the characters start to resolve the conflicts that have arisen. The drama should start to unfold quickly as if it doesn’t happen fast enough, your reader loses interest and gets bored.

A great example of rising action would be to inject a revenge angle in your story. Almost always in romance novels, that would be in the form of a love triangle where the third person is the one who plots revenge and carries it out.

In line with this, you should consider including “mean and despicable” characters who will undeniably make your main protagonist’s life miserable and make your readers take sides. This revenge angle should come to a satisfying climax making the reader unable to put the book down.

However, be careful about putting in too much drama. Let your imagination take over and get the details exactly right. Again, remember that conflicts arising in the story and the characters striving to resolve it is what brings your story to life.

Too much of a bad thing or a good thing won’t seem real to your reader and thus make them lose interest in the story. Don’t make it too predictable as well to the point that the readers are able to guess the ending in the middle of the story as they won’t read it to the end.

Writing a romance novel can be fun. Learn to experiment with your characters and make sure to endow them with enough human attributes your readers can relate to. Imagine how they will react to these characters and make sure that the resolution in the end, will be emotionally satisfying and humanly optimistic.

Writing novels always follows a formula or a general outline of how the story should progress. Romance novels, which are very popular with avid readers, follow a certain formula like always having two people as its main characters who fall in love, get into trouble for doing so and eventually resolve it in the end where everybody is happy.

That is the tried-and-tested romance novel writing formula.

Even as romance novel writers follow this formula, they should also remember to give their characters enough human attributes that the reader can relate to. Female readers in particular, love a character that they can root for, one that they grow attached to as they read and finish the novel.

She must meet the guy, fall in love, be forced to part ways and then reunite in time for the “happily ever after” ending. Female readers also love a handsome and dashing hero who is always there to save his damsel in distress, one they can easily get a crush on.

The other characters in the book must be relatable as well, including the antagonists — the characters whose feelings get spurned or rejected and therefore makes them plot revenge against your story’s protagonists. Remember though that they can’t be too mean or despicable. They too must be portrayed as not entirely heartless.

Of course once it’s established that the two main characters will meet, their meeting and eventual union must be made difficult with enough obstacles and roadblocks that they must overcome satisfactorily to make readers root for them even more.

Again, remember that there IS such a thing as too many obstacles — a reader may think that you don’t plan to have your main characters end up together and that is almost always a turn off for them.

Also, the twists and turns the story takes is an important element as well because they have to fit with your general plot. Out of whack twists will only make the reader wonder if they are reading a romance novel or a sci-fi book.

Today’s romance novel writers have a lot of options on what settings to use for their plots, how the story goes and how it ends. No newfangled method however, can erase the fact that there still is the same old romance novel writing formula to follow if you want your novel to become a national best seller.

The key to making a romance novel a hit is to keep the readers hanging — you must always keep their curiosity aroused and make them wonder if the two protagonists end up together. Whatever ending you decide on, it has to be emotionally satisfying and optimistic.

Whether you are copywriting words to a song, a poem or simply writing ad copy — copywriting conveys a message regardless of who or what your target audience is.

However, the only difference lies in how the message is conveyed and how your audience reacts to it. With copywriting lyrics, you write words set to a melody and one that is intended to have the listeners relate to the message it is conveying.

Relating and not simply listening. Every year composers write new songs and every year these songs never get airplay because the messages weren’t relatable and therefore, won’t encourage any kind of connection with its target audience.

When copywriting lyrics, you work to get a message across while at the same time establishing recall or recognition for that song. When people hear a song for the first time, they don’t remember the entire song but if a few select words or phrases can grab their attention so that the next time they hear the song, even without knowing the title or who sang it, they recognize it instantly.

A good example of this is Beyonce’s hit song “Irreplaceable.” When people hear the lines “to the left, to the left,” they know it’s her song and it was she who sang it because those were the words that left an impression, the words that inspired recall.

While great lyrics are what also makes a song sell, there are times when it’s not about just those. Putting together a song that can move people beyond words is what many people aspire to achieve but only very few can do.

Using words to take your audiences back in time or to places that only exist in their minds is an exemplary talent you should be so lucky to have. You don’t need to exert too much effort in conveying your message because the song does that on its own.

Sometimes it doesn’t have to be the entire song but the chorus or hook that does that. As long as people find something they can relate to with your song, you’ve got a winner.

Copywriting lyrics is writing from another person’s perspective. This is an important marketing strategy that record companies employ when promoting a new singer or a new album or CD — that the target audience have to be able to relate to it.

Consumers won’t use a product that will do absolutely nothing for them, as they will not listen or buy a CD with songs they can’t relate to. They have to need it to buy it.
